What is social work?

The term ‘social work’ can make anyone nervous, but social workers are here to listen, help and support you through life’s challenges. They can work in many different roles – not just clinical work, but community development, education, facilitation and policy development, to name a few. Anglican Family Care Team Leader for Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes, Vicki McDermott, says social work is all about change - whether that’s supporting people to make a change in their life by addressing challenges, or promoting social change in the systems we live in.

Alongside our Community Networks/LINK Social Worker Heather (who can provide short-term support to anyone in the Upper Clutha), our social services colleagues at the Wānaka Community Hub offer free, non-judgemental support to help you make changes. We can connect you to one of these agencies, or you can contact them directly using the details below.

Anglican Family Care works alongside families in their homes, to help them better understand their situation and assist positive change. They offer long-term support based on relationship building with the family; building on the strengths and skills they already have to strengthen parent-child relationships, address challenges and increase parental confidence, so that children can thrive in safe, loving environments.

Their team aim to empower families to change by helping them develop long-term strategies and build skills and capability. There are additional services available in the Queenstown area to support parents who are struggling with parenting skills, and children with mild/moderate mental health difficulties or behavioural problems. Contact the team to discuss these.
